A significant milestone for Larnaca and higher education in Cyprus was marked by the foundation stone ceremony of the new School of Marine Sciences, Technology and Sustainable Development of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). Located in the Mackenzie area, the project aims to strengthen Larnaca’s role as a hub for education, research and innovation in the years ahead.

The new School is designed to address contemporary challenges related to sustainability, marine sciences and the blue economy, offering specialised academic programmes and new research opportunities. At the same time, it further supports CUT’s international strategy through collaborations with academic and research institutions worldwide.

In his address, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, described the occasion as a particularly important day for Larnaca, emphasizing that the establishment of the School forms part of a broader vision for the advancement of higher education, research and innovation in Cyprus. He noted that universities should generate knowledge that responds to real societal needs and contributes meaningfully to improving citizens’ quality of life.

During the event, the EUt+ Coordination Centre at CUT had the opportunity to speak with the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, who highlighted that the creation of the new School represents an investment in future generations and in the city’s long-term development. She also stressed that the expansion of the university’s presence in Larnaca creates new opportunities for both students and the local community.

With the first students expected to begin their studies in 2027, the School aspires to become a regional reference point for education and research in the Eastern Mediterranean. Through CUT’s participation in the EUt+ European University Alliance, future students will also gain access to a wider European network of academic collaboration, international learning experiences and mobility opportunities, connecting Larnaca to the university of the future.
